A great team effort from Atletico to dominate the second half was not enough to earn any points
as Walsall Wood clung on to their slender first half lead, thanks to keeper Lloyd Ransome.
In a match where the pattern of play was pretty much dictated by the swirl of the wind, Wood had
most of the possession and attack of the first half, and AFC were dominant for the second half.
Unfortunately for AFC both Walsall goals were scored by Hinckley players, though both were really
unavoidable in the circumstances. On 20 minutes a great run by Tony Clarke down the left saw him
cross low to Sam Agar in the centre, though Dominic Perkins slid in to take it off his foot only
to see the ball divert into his own net. Ty Belford then produced a fine save tipping over a Clarke
effort, before he was helpless for Wood's second goal as a free kick to the back post from Keenan
Meakin-Richards rebounded back off the post hitting Rich Lavery and deflecting into the goal. It
should have been three for Wood but a superb double save from Belford kept out Clarke when one
on one, saving the initial shot and the follow up effort.Hinckley responded with a spell of pressure
just before half time with Lloyd Ransome saving a Josh Willis header, before Steve Hart reduced the
deficit when Kevin Thornton played him in, back to goal in the goal area, shooting on the turn and
beating defender and keeper.
With the wind behind them Hinckley now piled on the pressure for the second half. Thornton volleyed
just over from a Cooper throw, and Marcus Jackson saw Steve Hart inches away from his low cross into
the area. A superb defensive tackle from James Williams saw him start a team move from the back playing
in Luke Richards who ran through the midfield playing the ball to Cooper who cut back inside passing
to Bekir Halil on the right wing who tried to chip the keeper with Ransome just tipping the ball over
the bar. From the resulting corner the ball was cleared but only as far as Dom Perkins out wide right
who crossed back in for Lavery to head straight at the keeper. Cooper saw his long throw deceive Ransome
as the ball bounced over him, but the Wood keeper recovered and fell onto the ball before anyone else
could react. Halil in the centre of midfield then released Williams on the right playing in Jake Healy
who crossed central for Hart to half volley just over the bar when well placed. Then Hart again was on
the end of along clearance from Belford and half volleyed towards goal, only to see Ransome dive to his
left and tip the ball around the post. Richards sent Healy overlapping on the right and his low cross
to the back post was hooked away by a defender on the line, before the resulting corner was punched
away by Ransome and Williams saw his header back in drop onto the roof of the net. Rich Munday saw
his header from a Cooper throw deflected away for another corner, the result of which saw Hart shoot on
the turn only to be denied again by the out stretched leg of Ransome. The Wood keeper keeping his team
in it, and AFC had to settle for an excellent team performance but no points.
