Two goals for George Bowerman, one a superb chip, helped Atletico to victory over Stafford
Town in the opening game of the league season.
This was the first time AFC had played Stafford on their new 3G pitch, and Town came out of the
blocks first, with Ryan Bradshaw putting an effort wide and Connor Leek forced Haydn Whitcombe
into a save. George Bowerman replied for Hinckley with his goal bound shot deflected just past
the post, before Bowerman opened the scoring after the quarter hour mark. Sean Williams played a
quick free kick wide right to Sam Agar who ran into area, drilled across the goal for Bowerman
to blast into the net. As Stafford were picking themselves up from that, AFC hit them again minutes
later, Williams again provider, running down the right around the defender then squared to
Bowerman central in the area who dummied a shot to make the keeper dive, but stepped over the
ball for Isaac Cooper behind him to score into the unguarded goal. The remainder of the half was
pretty much all Hinckley with Stafford reduced to long range efforts, though few goal chances
created. Agar stung the hands of Josh Moreton as the keeper tipped his shot onto the post, then
right on the stroke of half time a sublime bit of skill from Bowerman, 30 yards out, saw the keeper
out his goal area and weighted a perfect chip over him dropping into the net for his second and
a half time AFC 3-0 lead.
Stafford came out second half determined to get something out of the game and pegged back Hinckley
for the first 25 minutes of the half. Just before the hour a great run from Jasper Johns down the
left saw the winger cut inside and fire low past Whitcombe giving Stafford a goal back. Then
Johns turned provider 10 minutes later his corner to the back post saw David Wilcock rise highest
and heading into goal as Stafford scored their second. This woke AFC out of their slumber and with
Stafford pressing looking for an equaliser, Agar broke free of the offside trap and then played
in Jake Healy to score Hinckley's fourth settling any late nerves.
