Atletico came away from their League Cup 1st leg semi final at St Andrews with just a 1
goal deficit, after a game that ebbed and flowed in favour of both teams.
It was a terrible start for AFC as Drews came flying out of the blocks, taking the lead
in the second minute with the first attack, Rob Morgan running the right channel and firing
across Haydn Whitcombe. Minutes later the lead was extended to two goals when Sam Hollis
saw his long range effort deflected taking the ball over Whitcombe and dropping sharply
into the net. Atletico composed themselves and didn't panic playing some one touch football
and reduced the deficit on the quarter hour after a great through ball from Sean Williams
saw Sam Agar one-on-one and slotted past Alex Ram. AFC were seeing plenty of the ball now
as Drews seemed to have run out of ideas after their quick start, and on the half hour the
scores were level when Lee Thomas overlapped and crossed into the box that was deflected
into the air and as the ball dropped back down Ryan Seal volleyed into goal from 12 yards out.
With AFC in the ascendancy now approaching half time, Sean Williams saw his effort from a
tight angle come back off the post, before Javia Roberts was played into the right corner
by Lee Butler, and Roberts cut back inside crossing to the far post, watching as the spin
on the ball took it over the head of Ram into the top left corner giving Hinckley a 2-3 half
time lead.
St Andrews being the team from the higher division, came out after the break more determined
following a loud half time exchange, and Whitcombe would find himself much the busier keeper,
first tipping Morgan's shot around the post, then smothering a Shay Brennan effort. Agar then had
a glorious chance to extend the lead on the hour as he ran onto a Roberts through ball, only
to see his shot beat Ram and rebound off the base of the post. To add insult to this, Drews
were level moments later when Hirst made Whitcombe save excellently from close range, but
followed up and slotted in the rebound. With 15 minutes remaining Brennan gave St Andrews
their slender lead for the second leg getting past his marker and firing across Whitcombe
the ball going into goal off the post. Whitcombe kept the lead down to just the one goal
as in stoppage time he pulled off another low save from Hollis keeping AFC in with a chance
in the next leg ina couple of weeks time.
