Atletico ended their 5 match winning run after losing to champions elect Bromsgrove Sporting
in this top of the table clash at Stade de St John.
With Paul Sullivan still injured and Sam Agar still unavailable, the forward partnership of Javia
Roberts and Luke Richards carried on. The only change to the team from the Vase win was Sean
Williams brought into midfield for Andy Westwood. The match however was not the greatest, on a very
sticky pitch flowing football was at a premium, and Bromsgrove adapted to the conditions quicker
and better than Hinckley. Sporting got off to a great start taking the lead in the second minute,
as Haydn Whitcombe jumped to catch a long ball into the area, he appeared to be impeded and the
ball dropped to the floor at the feet of Jason Cowley who bundled the ball into the net from
close range. Hinckley kept a lot of possession after this, but couldn't create real goal chances
whilst Bromsgrove were happy to hit to the corner trying to catch AFC on the break, which ultimately
worked much better for them. Reece Hewitt pulled a shot across goal, Rob Bunn struck wide with his
effort, before Bunn again forced Whitcombe into a good save. For AFC Darryl Thomas overlapping on
the left had the better of Aaron Roberts most of the half, but time and again his crosses were
wasted. Just before half time Roberts went on a solo run beating 3 defenders but his shot was
tipped around the post by Jon Brown in the Sporting goal.
After the break, again Hinckley had a lot of possession as Bromsgrove began to sit deeper but
again struggled to create many chances. The task became more difficult on the hour when striker
Luke Richards was scythed down from behind by Luke Edwards, for which the player only received
a yellow card, though Richards was helped off the pitch unable to walk. Sporting took advantage
of the change and a fine individual goal from Hewitt doubled their lead, as he skipped a couple
of challenges dribbling to the edge of the area and fired into the top corner from 20 yards out.
Undeterred AC stuck at the task and pulled a goal back immediately as Darious Darkin was allowed
space 25 yards out and he fired a shot through the crowded area which deflected past Brown. As Hinckley
chased the equaliser the game opened up with both sides wasting chances. Roberts forced Brown into
a diving save tipping his chip over the bar and Ahmed Ali blazed over when well placed in the area.
In the dying moments of the game Lee Butler stepped up to take a free kick and the ball curled just
the wrong side of the post, meaning Sporting finished with the 3 points.
