AFC had to settle for a draw after taking an early lead in the A5 derby, through Greg
Pearson's first goal for the club, with Nuneaton Griff scraping a point thanks to a
late equaliser.
AFC were much the better side first half as Griff looked sluggish and demotivated, Marco
Adaggio went close early on before Pearson gave Hinckley the lead on 12 minutes. Luke
Richards ran onto a ball over his shoulder and as Andy Needham raced out of goal his rushed
clearance fell to Pearson who simply chipped over the stranded keeper into goal. Griff
responded with a free kick coming off the post, and then Tom Cross made a superb save
from a Luke Shorthouse point blank header. Pearson thought he'd got a second for Hinckley
when he ran onto a Lee Thomas ball in from the left, but the linesman's flag was up
for offside, despite it being a close call. With AFC still pressing Needham stopped
efforts from Ryan Seal and Darious Darkin, but Hinckley couldn't add to the score.
After the break Griff began to show some effort and get back into the game. They spent
a lot of time in possession, but actually created only a few chances. Cross made regulation
saves from Dave Barnett and Ben Ashby, before Griff scored their equaliser 3 minutes
from time. Danny Harris crossed from the left flank and found substitute Ryan Slinn at
the far post to tap in from close range. It was AFC who had a glorious chance to win
the game right on time when Alando Lewis was free in the goal area from a Thomas left
wing cross, but took too much time to shoot and the ball was smothered. Leaving the
final score 1-1.
