AFC won this Leicestershire Senior Cup match in extra time, despite being reduced to
10 men in the second half and make shift left winger, keeper Sam Arnold, got himself
on the score sheet to celebrate his 50th appearance for AFC.
With quite a number of players out injured and others unavailable through work, AFC lined
up with a makeshift side and Sam Arnold was recalled to the goalkeeping role reaching
his 50th appearance for Hinckley AFC. Despite an unfamiliar line up AFC started much the
better of the two sides and had a good 35 minute spell of dominance. Luke Richards opened
the scoring for Atletico after good work by Lee Thomas on the left, his cross setting up
Richards at the back post who headed into goal, and even though Will Highland saved
the ball he was a yard behind his goal line when he came to ground with the ball breaking
free and Richards followed up to pounce on the loose ball blasting into the back of the
net just to make sure. Atletico doubled the lead on the half hour thanks to a sublime
through ball from Ryan Seal releasing Richards into the right channel, the Hinckley forward
taking the ball into the area and curling a shot around the desperate reach of Highland
into goal. The B4668 responded to this with a greater urgency, but they will be very
disappointed to have ended the half without a shot even on target.
The second half was much more open and clearly with their half time instructions the B4668
came out firing all guns and would take just 15 minutes to level the scores. Poor defending
left Tom McGlinchey plenty of time and his cross/shot to the far post drifted over Arnold
and off the post into the goal. More sloppy defending saw a neat move with the AFC defence
merely spectating, as Matt Stenson got on the end of a low cross and couldn't miss from
close in. With Richards struggling with a knock, sub goalkeeper Tom Cross was forced into
an outfield role up front, and very nearly played in Seal, whose first time effort rebounded
off the fortunate Highland's legs. A moment of controversy minutes from time saw AFC's
Rico Taylor dismissed from the game, as himself and Greg Downes were going for a 50/50 ball,
the diminutive AFC winger pulled out of the tackle at the last moment, but Downes decided to
throw himself to the ground with a yelp and stayed there until the ref had given Taylor a
second yellow card and sent him off. Unfortunately for Downes all he achieved was to galvanise
the rest of the AFC team, and moments later Seal was through on goal, but with his shot
blocked the ball fell to Cross, who couldn't quite turn the ball into goal, sending the
game into extra time.
Extra time saw a switch in roles as Cross went back into goal, and Arnold came out to fill in
the left wing slot. It was end to end football, but with tired legs for both sides goal
chances were few. The B4668 did take the lead for the first time in the tie in the first
half of extra time when Sam Munton was unmarked in the centre side footing into goal.
However that lead was short lived as from the kick off Seal won a free kick on the edge
of the area and played it to the near post where Arnold glanced his header past the
stranded Highland levelling the scores again. It was the turn of Cross now to keep AFC
in the game pulling off a superb point blank reaction save tipping over a close range shot
from Munton. Then Arnold went on a run down the left evading 3 defenders, but couldn't
get enough power behind his shot to trouble Highland. With the game heading towards penalties
the match would be decide by just one spot kick, as Marcus Jackson overlapped and crossed
into the box from the right a defender stopped the ball with his hand and the ref pointed
to the penalty spot with a minute left on the clock. Seal stepped up and dispatched the
spot kick into the roof of the net, winning the game for AFC.
