Athletico won their first ever FA Cup tie, winning at Walsall Wood's Oak Park, thanks
to two late goals from Justin Nisbett and Marco Adaggio.
In an 'end to end' open game both sides enjoyed spells of dominance and both sides had
chances to win the game, before Atletico scored two late goals to progress. With the higher
league club now at home you'd expect them to race out the blocks and indeed Walsall had
their first goal effort within a few minutes, but Drew Aiton dragged his shot wide when
played in by Corey Currithers. Hinckley responded through Luke Richards cutting inside
from the left flank and forcing Mariusz Kisiel to save low, then Javia Roberts also went
on a twisting run from the right flank before Kisiel also saved his chance. Wood were
unlucky 20 minutes in when Charlton Davies was injured in a 50/50 tackle forcing him off
with a cut to the leg, increasing the tension of the game, with the Wood bench showing
their anger at the unfortunate outcome. Currithers then saw his effort gathered by Sam
Arnold after a deflection in the AFC area, before Hinckley took the lead just after the
half hour. Javia Roberts had switched to the left flank and beat his marker playing the
ball across the area, teeing up Nathan Walker on the right, who fired into the top corner,
in off the crossbar, from 20 yards, giving Atletico the lead. Right on half time Wood had
a glorious chance to equalise, but Holgate drove his shot against the post and Currithers
skied over with the follow up.
Walsall must have suffered a half time backlash as they came out for the second half fired
up and showing their higher league credential, keeping Hinckley under some sustained spells
of pressure. It was no surprise when Holgate levelled on the hour finishing off a move from
Shane O'Reilly crossing into the area, and a Carrithers lay off presenting the forward with
his chance. Wood continued to press and only a full stretch Sam Arnold kept the score level
tipping a high cross over the bar, before Carrithers saw his long range effort curl wide. AFC
then found an extra gear from somehwere and from Wood doing all the attacking they were
on the back foot for the last 10 minutes of the game. Roberts again cut in from the left
flank beat his marker and with everyone expecting a cut back, he fired across goal, the ball
just missing the post by inches. Roberts was the architect again as Atletico took the
lead with 5 minutes remaining, again beating his man on the left and this time he did
cut back for Adaggio, who's shot was blocked, but fell to Justin Nisbett unmarked at the
far post to blast into goal from 8 yards out. Hinckley made absolute certain right on time,
with almost a carbon copy, as Roberts ran into the area from the left flank, yet again, and
another cut back for Adaggio saw the striker this time guide the ball past Kisiel from 8
yards out.
A great night for Hinckley AFC history, and now the club will travel to Bromsgrove Sporting
on Saturday 29th for the next Preliminary round of the FA Cup.
